Hindi is the most popular language spoken in India with nearly 425 million people who recognize Hindi as their first language along with an additional 120 million more people who speak it as their second language. However, Hindi is far from a monolithic language - there are a number of dialectical variations depending on the geographical location. Some popular dialects of Hindi include -


1) Khari Boli in North and East of Delhi

2) Braj Bhasha in Mathura, Agra, Etah and Aligarh

3) Maithili in Bihar and Jharkhand


Hindi boasts of a rich cultural heritage with a long tradition of literature and poetry. Hindi literature is broadly divided into four phases or Yugas namely -


· Adikal (the Early Period) [10th C-14th C]

· Bhaktikal (the Devotional Period) [14th C -17th C]

· Ritikal (the Scholastic Period) [1600-1850 AD]

· Adhunik Kal (the Modern Period) [mid19th- till date]


Other than written literature, one of the most popular forms of popular Hindi culture featuring is the film industry, known as ‘Bollywood. Bollywood has become a powerful cultural force that influences the life of millions in what scholars have described as the "social catalytic function" of Bollywood.
